Accessories & Furnitures to Add to Your Living Space

Are you getting bored of your living space? Then it is overdue for a change up, as you do spend half of your day inside your home. You do not have to buy all of these new items from the shop, in fact, I encourage you to look around for second-hand items to save some money. The list of products in this article are my own personal recommendations to add to your home, that I have/ want in my home too.

Interesting Rugs

In my experience in interior design, I have always thought that rugs can make or break a room. The floor is still a blank canvas that is normally left untouched, by adding a rug with a different colour or an abstract pattern. Rugs always look better on wooden floors but they still can work on other flooring. To give you some ideas of what different types of rugs you can add to your room are the persian rugs that are common for drummers to have under their drums, or go with something different like a rug that features a logo or a flag.

Ambient Lighting

Get your bright main light off and switch to some ambient lighting. Have you ever thought that your main light is too much and gives you a headache by how bright it illuminates the room? Well I definitely did, so I switched to the idea of multiple little lights around my room with a warmer feeling to them too. I believe that  orange or red lights are easier on the eyes and tend to relax you better. Another benefit to switching to multiple little lights is that they are aesthetically pleasing too. Lava lamps and overhead lights can add so much more texture and depth to your room that will impress your guests.

Art and Paintings

Adding art to your walls instantly adds personality to it and a visual focus point which can transform your room. Or you could add personal photos to your wall and make them canvas prints from Snapfish. Displaying art, photos or posters tells your guests a story and gives some more character to you as a person, it also makes your house more of a home and feel more authentically like it is yours.

Book Shelf

If you do read, a book shelf works well to fill space in your room and provide people with your personal interests and identity through your carefully curated books. From an interior design perspective too, bookshelves add some interesting structure and colour from the books to your room. It is perfect for storage too, you could add some photos or plants to it to change it up from just books. What is great about bookshelves is how they are so versatile, large or small, allowing you to either make it a primary detail, or a small little cherry on top to your interior design.

Plants

There are so many benefits I can think of adding plants to your room. I’ll start with how plants purify the air, making it more fresh for your home, which therefore also makes you feel better as the presence of nature and the smell of fresh air can remind you of nature. Plants are all so diverse so you should find the right plant for your living space, but I recommend tall plants for the corners of your room and wider plants to be on window seals or office desks. I think that there are never too many plants for your home so go crazy with it and you will not regret it.

Coffee Tables

A nice coffee table with a rug works well to fill in empty space in your room, while also being great for functionality for your food and drinks. What also makes it great for your living room is that it works as a visual anchor that pulls the room together. As coffee tables are in the middle of the room, it is a great piece of furniture to express your personal style, with some candles, magazines or plants.

Add Shelves

Why not make a change to your walls too and add some shelves to allow more space and remove clutter from your home. Adding a shelf to your walls, along with paintings creates an appealing aesthetic to your plain walls.

Mini Sofa or Chair

There is nothing better than coming home from a long day at work to a nice, comfy sofa where you can put your feet up. Baring in mind comfort, they are also a perfect way to add your creative touch to your living room. I think that corner sofas go well with a nice coffee table as it creates a tucked away feeling to your home where you can truly relax.

Conclusion

Changing your living space boosts daily wellbeing by creating functional, personalised elements like expressive rugs, ambient lighting, curated art, and indoor plants, which therefore expresses you as a person. Embracing second-hand and retail buys helps diverse and mix different styles to your home.

A top tip for enhancing your home is mixing different timelines and styles of furniture. When you mix  unexpected eras and styles, for example a mid-century modern credenza next to a sleek contemporary light, your space will look more interesting and unique to everyone else’s homes; The contrast  triggers a visual dialogue, making rooms feel dynamic rather than static.

Furthermore, intentional design impacts your neurological state. Soft textures lower cortisol, while greenery actively purifies toxins to boost respiratory health. One thing that is important is you do not fill your house with empty filler items, instead, build up your collection of accessories to add to your home. Adding items that hold memories spark emotions in yourself and your guests, therefore adding some emotional pull to your home as well. One last thing for you to remember before you go, is that your home is a window to your soul, so make it worthwhile.

Ultimately, your environment should be a reflection of your evolving journey. Whether you are thrifting unique treasures or investing in timeless staples, focus on what brings you genuine joy and comfort. By carefully selecting pieces that resonate with your spirit, you transform mere square footage into a true sanctuary for yourself.
