With the National Medical Commission (NMC) taking over from the Medical Council of India, significant changes have been implemented. The eligibility for participation in NEET UG Counseling now hinges on two criteria: marks obtained in Class XII or its equivalent and the NEET UG 2023 Score.

Consistent with previous years, a prerequisite for engaging in NEET UG Counseling 2023 is the successful completion of 10+2 or its equivalent in the Science stream. This entails clearing main subjects such as Biology (or Biotechnology), Physics, and Chemistry.

Furthermore, candidates must secure a minimum of 50% marks if they fall under the unreserved category. For those in the reserved categories, the threshold is lower, with a minimum score of 45% for Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates and 40% for SC/ST candidates.

Additionally, candidates must have reached the age of 17 by December 31 of the enrollment year.

Understanding the NEET-UG Qualifying Score Concept

In 2023, it is crucial to distinguish between ‘scoring the cut-off’ and ‘qualifying’ in NEET UG, and a basic understanding of percentiles adds depth to this comprehension.

Primarily, NEET UG assesses an aspirant’s grasp of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry concepts. This evaluation serves as a determinant to ascertain if the aspirant qualifies for an opportunity to secure an MBBS seat in various Government Medical Colleges in India. Hence, the minimum score at which an aspirant can secure such a seat is referred to as the NEET UG ‘cut-off’ for that particular year. However, this is not the sole aspect of consideration.

NEET-UG also gauges whether candidates, who may not have scored enough for the aforementioned opportunity, merit the chance to become practicing doctors in India. The responsibilities and authority linked with a licensed medical practitioner in India necessitate a certain academic proficiency threshold, below which one loses eligibility to pursue a medical career.
