Hi all! I am currently reviewing our volunteer onboarding processes at the clinic. We utilize medical students and retired nurses to fill administrative roles as well as to perform other types of support work. Our current policy is to check employees against the OIG Exclusion List to ensure compliance and protect the patients at our facility, but I want to clarify whether our volunteers (i.e., unpaid) need to be checked as well, considering that they will have access to patient records. Finally, if someone is on the OIG Exclusion List, does that preclude them from volunteering or just prohibit billing? We are doing our best to ensure we comply with the OIG requirements without putting too much of a burden on our volunteers.
