Harassing collection practices are illegal, and you don’t have to tolerate them. Repeated or late-night calls may violate federal law. Collectors cannot make false threats of lawsuits, wage garnishment, or arrest. They must send a written debt validation notice within five days of first contact. It’s unlawful for them to call your workplace after you ask them to stop or to discuss your debt with others. Any intimidation, abusive language, or threats violates the FDCPA and may entitle you to damages.
