There is always an element of romance associated with the notion of living in a small town that city folks dream of. This includes waving good mornings to the postman, parking right outside the bakery, and feeling secure enough to leave your door unlocked. With seven years having passed while residing within a small town consisting of less than 4,000 people, I have learned to cherish the complexities of living without being governed by neon lights and subway trains. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that residing in a small town is not all sunshine and roses. It comes with the advantage of tranquility and camaraderie but also requires you to rely on yourself when it comes to practical matters such as logistics and recreation.
In contrast, although the peace is soothing, the absence of an international airport in close proximity becomes evident when a business trip or vacation suddenly materializes. One day, a rainy Tuesday to be precise, I was forced to find an alternative route to catch my late-night flight. In such a situation, my neighbor suggested booking a taxi service from Luton Airport Taxi from Hemel Hempstead that could take me from Hemel Hempstead in less than half an hour. Thus, it became clear that living in a small town has one benefit: you sacrifice being part of an endless hustle, but you have all the facilities at your disposal if you plan correctly.
One of the greatest advantages of life in a small town is its level of social connectivity. While anonymity becomes a form of protection in a big city, it just does not exist in a small town. Within six months of living here, the local greengrocer knew my name, the librarian was able to keep track of my favorite literary genre behind the desk, and the man at the cafe knew what kind of coffee I would have ordered without my having to pay at all. There is also a safety net that becomes evident in the time of trouble, such as when my car breaks down during one particularly harsh winter.
But such closeness means the end of any anonymity. The speed of gossip is greater than the speed of broadband Internet connection. Everybody knows what you are up to, what kind of license plate your car has, and with whom you were speaking in a bar. This kind of environment can be suffocating if you are an introvert or value your privacy. You soon realize that you should greet people even when you feel awful because ignoring them may be a gossip topic of the week at the local post office.
Well, there’s the elephant in the room. No small town would have large industrial areas or Fortune 500 companies’ head offices. Most inhabitants commute from their hometowns. The daily exodus begins in peace—train ride at 6:15 am to reach the nearest city, a van to industrial areas, or standing in a queue to fill up your car tank. Life may cost you less here, as far as cheaper housing and affordable groceries go. However, time costs more than square meters.
And this is where the unique geographical features of your location become important. Being in Hemel Hempstead provides a perfect balance. Despite the small-town atmosphere of Hemel Hempstead with its ancient town center and rivers, there is still a commuting zone around this place. However, when you feel you need to expand your horizons by travelling internationally, you would be amazed how much infrastructure can support such a task. I remember one particular Monday, when the breakdown of my central heating and cancellation of my train made me think that my business flight would not take off after all. Once realizing that the public transport will require at least three hours’ drive through London, I decided to take a Taxi Hemel Hempstead to Luton Airport. This route saved me one and a half hour, which proves that even though small towns do not have their terminals, they are well-connected.
For all those who love nature, small town living is an improvement by miles! The costs per square feet of homes here are far much cheaper than those in big cities. In small towns, a small income can provide someone with a home surrounded by a garden, a driveway, and perhaps the view of fields as opposed to walls. I enjoy gardening, and I am blessed with my own vegetable garden, a place where I light up fires and even do some work from a window overlooking horses on the farm.
However, space means chores, and chores mean more time in the sun. There are no super services late at night, for instance when one needs to repair any damages in the house. There is need for getting a local expert to do the work, and he may not be available for a month. Finally, entertainment becomes a challenge. There is no world-class five star hotel down the road nor a good Jazz club right next door. Entertainment is through the local pub quiz, movie nights at the village hall and walks.

Being part of a small community is about expectations management. Small communities work well for parents (safe streets, good schools), for remote workers (tranquil setting), and for people who have retired (calming peace). Small communities do not work for younger people who seek a nightlife or for individuals whose career requires being in the big city every day.
However, the key to success in small towns is all about logistics. You realize that you will be spending a lot more time behind the wheel. You will also realize that it takes two whole days rather than two hours to have something delivered by Amazon. However, you will be able to enjoy other things like walking your dog and seeing some deer in the process.
Ultimately, the real issue isn’t whether small towns are right or wrong; it’s whether one prefers tranquility over hustle. Personally, sitting by the fireplace with a cup of tea, hearing only the breeze, but having the certainty that a safe transport from Luton can be arranged with a simple phone call, provides the ideal balance. Small-town living isn’t about holding on to traditions. It’s about moving at a different pace into the future—a future that values connections and makes coming home truly feel like arriving home.
