Jacob & Co. Introduces Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon Baguette Black and Orange Sapphire
Let’s be honest, the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Chiron replica is an amazing sports car. With 1,500 horsepower, it’s pure hypercar madness and it’s even challenging for the title of the world’s fastest production car. But that doesn’t mean I want to wear a watch that looks like it on my wrist – and that’s exactly what Jacob & Co.’s latest haute horlogerie creation is all about, the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon Black and Orange.
Jacob & Co. is known for its quirky designs, so it makes sense that they’ve collaborated with Bugatti on several occasions before, even if the end result isn’t always to everyone’s taste. The case shape references Bugatti’s aesthetic, but while the sleek lines and exquisite proportions of Bugatti’s sports cars are designed to maximize speed and aerodynamics, this watch is a little chunky and has a slightly shorter nose. In the miniaturized design, some of the essence of the Bugatti sports car was lost in the translation process.
The case is crafted from 18K white gold and is set with over 400 gemstones – 190 baguette-cut diamonds, 169 baguette-cut black sapphires (across the case and crown) and 42 baguette-cut orange sapphires. I have to tip my hat to the fact that the texture created by the geometric pavé setting is indeed pleasing to the eye, but that’s par for the course for any watch with so many gemstones.
However, as with a car, it’s what’s under the hood that really matters. The powerhouse of this watch, the Jacob & Co.-made JCAM37 manual-winding movement, is clearly visible thanks to various skeletonizations and a clever bridge suspension system. It has a 60-hour power reserve, a tourbillon and plenty of shock protection to keep the watch ticking, all of which we’d expect from a watch with this movement.
The highlight of this watch is the miniature replica of the Bugatti Chiron engine clearly visible at 6 o’clock. Technically, it’s an additional part of the movement, controlled by one of the buttons. It runs on its own power reserve, so it doesn’t interfere with the basic functions of the watch. When it’s turned on, the 16 pistons are driven by a crankshaft that simulates the operation of an internal combustion engine, and two “turbochargers” are connected to it, which spin up, further highlighting its similarities to a car (although the car has four turbochargers).
Overall, it’s exactly what we’ve come to expect from Jacob & Co.: large, bejeweled, uniquely styled, and equipped with high-end mechanicals. Unless you own a Bugatti Chiron, I don’t see why you’d buy it, and even then, it’s not for everyone. And I don’t think it’s cool enough to deserve the poster status of the real Chiron. Besides, it’s a one-of-a-kind piece in its own right, so you don’t have to worry about whether you can afford it, which is probably a good thing for your wallet and style.
