Why are My QuickBooks Updates Stuck?

Some reasons could be causing QuickBooks updates to get stuck. Here are some reasons:

  • Slow or Inconsistent Internet Connection: If the internet connection is slow or inconsistent, QuickBooks cannot download or install updates. Updates require a good and stable connection.
  • Damaged or Corrupt QuickBooks Setup Files: If the QuickBooks setup files are lost or damaged, they can cause update failure or lag. Damaging or corrupting data files will also hinder the update’s installation.
  • Interference of Firewalls or Antivirus: In some cases, security programs like firewalls and antivirus software interfere with QuickBooks updates by mistakenly recognizing them as malicious or unauthorized.

Signs of a Hung QuickBooks Update

A stalled QuickBooks update can be explained in any of a dozen nearly differentiated ways.

One of the signs that you can check for are as follows:

  • The update hangs at a certain percentage.
  • QuickBooks becomes frozen or hangs while updating.
  • The progress bar used while updating is the same one that freezes and doesn’t allow anything to be achieved toward completing it.
  • QuickBooks alerts you that you are not current and instead shows you an error message.
  • If you find that you are experiencing any of these, then it is an indication that your update has gotten hung, and you will need to troubleshoot.

How to Troubleshoot a Hung QuickBooks Update?

Some of the steps in troubleshooting that you can try so that you may rectify the problem and reverse your QuickBooks update to its original point are given below:

Check Your Internet Connection

  • Before attempting difficult troubleshooting, make sure your internet connection is steady. The most common reason why updates fail is a slow or unstable internet connection. Test your speed or surf a couple of websites to check if your internet connection is stable. If your connection is unstable or weak, change to a better internet connection and then proceed with the update.

Run QuickBooks as Administrator

Running QuickBooks in an administrator account may be the solution to update issues.

How to do it:

  • Close QuickBooks if it is open.
  • Right-click on the desktop icon of QuickBooks.
  • Click Run as Administrator.
  • Re-run the update process.
  • Running QuickBooks in an administrator account may give it the right to privileges to enable it to install the updates.

Temporarily Disable Your Antivirus or Firewall

  • Your firewall or antivirus may be blocking QuickBooks updates from downloading or installing. Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall and then attempt to install the update to find out if it installs normally. And then, of course, don’t forget to turn on your antivirus or firewall so your computer will be safe.

Use the QuickBooks Update Tool

QuickBooks has a built-in utility that can indeed fix update problems.

You can execute the QuickBooks Update Tool by following these steps:

  • Open QuickBooks.
  • Go to Help and click Update QuickBooks.
  • In Update QuickBooks, select Reset Updates.
  • Click Get Updates and attempt to download the update once again.
  • The tool will remove the previous files and resume the updating process, which will fix the problem.

Clear Cache Files

Trash cache files will not allow updating. Deleting temporary files can allow QuickBooks to update without error.

Do the following:

  • Shut down QuickBooks.
  • Go to the directory where QuickBooks update files exist (the directory location as given by QuickBooks instructions).
  • Delete all of the temporary files, reboot QuickBooks, and try updating again.
  • Deleting the cache removes outdated, corrupted files that will halt updating.

Repair QuickBooks Installation

If all this doesn’t work, then your QuickBooks installation is broken. Fixing QuickBooks under these circumstances will solve the issue.

Below are the instructions on how to repair it:

  • Visit Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  • Find QuickBooks in the list of programs installed.
  • Right-click on QuickBooks and select Repair.
  • Obey the screen prompts to fix the software.
  • Attempt the update again after the repair.

Reinstall QuickBooks

  • If the QuickBooks application program itself cannot be fixed, then a clean install will be required. Remove QuickBooks from your computer and reinstall it with the new installation package that was downloaded from the official QuickBooks website. Pre-backup of QuickBooks data is highly recommended.

How to uninstall QuickBooks

  • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  • Right-click on QuickBooks and click Uninstall.
  • Uninstall QuickBooks from your computer as per the instructions.
  • Try again to update after the reinstall.
