From Student to Master: Reiki Grand Master Mentorship

From Student to Master: Reiki Training and Mentorship

As I reflect on my journey as a Reiki Master, I am reminded of the profound impact it has had on my life. Initiated on April 1, 1982, by Phyllis Furumoto, I was the fourth Reiki Grand Master she initiated. I committed to honoring Reiki as an oral tradition and making it my sole source of income. This commitment required a huge leap of faith, especially as a single parent with two children and no other source of income. However, I trusted that the universe would provide for my family, and it has been a profound experience of support and love.

Over the years, I have upheld my commitment to the oral tradition and have been fortunate enough to travel extensively, giving seminars and treatments. This experience has taught me the essence of Reiki and has given me the strength to stand strong in the face of challenges.

As I look back, I realize that the concept of “grand master” could have been explored and discussed amongst Reiki Masters. It is a possibility that each and every one of us can aspire to, and it is our birthright to live in the question “What is grand mastery?” This is a powerful spiritual focus that can guide our lives.

In my opinion, the designation of “grand master” should be earned by living an exemplary life, not just by title or position. I believe that we have forgotten the naivety of the early days of Reiki, when we were all “babies” in our practice. We have a great opportunity to free ourselves from confusion and return to the true simplicity of this gentle practice.

I do not align with the complex notions of grandmaster, office of grandmaster, lineage bearer, or licensing fees for Masters. These concepts do not come from the system itself and only serve to benefit a select few. Instead, I believe that we are all lineage bearers, rightful heirs, and potentially grandmasters. It is not the exclusive right of one person.

As we move forward, I encourage all Reiki Masters to speak up, be heard, and bring forth the dignity and integrity of this teaching. Let us return to the simplicity and love that is at the heart of Reiki.
