Steel fabrication drawing services are a critical part of any structural project—whether it’s a commercial building, a bridge, or an industrial facility. These drawings ensure that every element of the structure is fabricated, cut, and assembled correctly based on the engineer’s design.

Outsourcing vs. In-house: We outsource our shop drawings, but only to trusted partners with strong QC processes. Internal resources are limited, and outsourcing lets us scale faster while staying focused on core engineering.

Software: Our outsourced teams typically use Tekla Structures. It’s excellent for steel, with accurate BOM generation and 3D visualization. We use Navisworks and Revit for coordination.

Biggest Challenges: Late design changes and incomplete architectural models cause the most issues. We’ve had columns show up on-site that didn’t fit due to missed RFIs or outdated drawings. Now, we strictly enforce a sign-off workflow and version control.

Great discussion! We do basic shop drawings in-house, but outsource complex ones to an experienced detailer, which saves time and improves accuracy.

We use Advance Steel, but are considering a switch to Tekla for better clash detection.
