Best Time to Visit Brazil: Weather, Festivals & Off-Peak Tips

If Brazil is on your mind — filled with music, endless beaches and lush rainforests — the obvious question to ask is when the best time to visit is. I wondered about it myself when I booked my first flight to Rio.

The truth? Brazil can be enjoyed anytime, but when you visit makes a difference in your trip.

From planning airport details like choosing a meet and greet at Gatwick to figuring out whether you want sunshine or off-season savings in Brazil, timing shapes everything.

Let’s talk about the different aspects to help you make your trip perfect for you.

December to March is the High Season, with bright skies, heat and a lot of festivities.

My first trip to Brazil was timed for Carnival which normally happens in February or March. The atmosphere in these months is unlike anything else. Now is Brazil’s summer, so places like Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife are filled with music, parades, colorful costumes and beach celebrations. There’s plenty of sunshine, the drinks are refreshing and everyone is in good spirits.

The period from April until June is called Shoulder Season which means you can enjoy comfortable temperatures and fewer people.

This is likely my favorite season for traveling. From April to June, the weather is milder and you won’t find as many tourists. With the air getting cooler, cities seem to calm down. I went to Sao Paulo and Party in May and it was perfect — not too warm, no crowds and cheaper than normal.

Pros:

  • An excellent way to discover cities and their culture.
  • A fantastic choice for hiking and visiting national parks (such as Chapada Diamantina or Iguaçu Falls).
  • Hotels are available at lower prices.

Cons:

  • Not good news for beach lovers — the water isn’t as warm as during summer.
  • In some southern cities, the weather can turn cool.
  • July to September is considered Brazil’s low season which happens to be winter.

Most people don’t associate Brazil with winter, but there is snow in the south during this time. I went to Florianopolis in July and I needed a light jacket at night.

Note: Always check airport parking deals at Gatwick and book according to your travel needs

Besides, winter isn’t as harsh here as it is in North America or Europe and you do get some perks.

Pros:

  • It’s much less expensive and there are far less tourists.
  • Wildlife can be easily spotted in the Pantanal and Amazon because trails are better and there’s less rain.
  • It’s still a pleasant time to travel in the North and Northeast (Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza).

Cons:

  • Temperatures in the South can be quite low at night and it’s not unusual to see 10°C (50°F).
  • Not recommended for a beach trip in Rio or Florianopolis.
  • Spring: October to November – Time to Warm up Before the Big Celebrations

You can’t go wrong with a visit to Brazil during this time. It’s getting warmer, flowers are open and the travelers haven’t swarmed the area yet.

I was in Bahia in early November and it was perfect — sunny skies, caipirinhas by the beach and almost no tourists to be seen.

Pros:

You’ll observe Carnival, New Year’s Eve parties (which are great in Rio) and lots of summer events.

The best beach weather has temperatures over 30°C (86°F) and lots of sunshine.

Cons:

Things are packed and costly in New York. Prices for hotels and flights go up during Carnival and New Year.

It’s often humid, mainly in Rio and the Amazon region.

If Carnival is your goal, book your trip far ahead and get used to the excitement. I was in Lapa, where the nightlife never stopped, but I should have booked my hotel earlier.

During Shoulder Season in April, May and June, you’ll find mild weather and less crowded places.

I love coming during this season. During April, May and June, you can expect better weather and less crowding.

The air becomes a little cooler and cities seem less busy. I spent a week in Sao Paulo and Paraty during May and it was perfect — not overly hot, no crowds and better deals.
