The Importance of Pool Chemical Safety
Pool chemical safety is critically important because many chemicals, particularly those with strong oxidation properties, can become dangerously hot or release toxic, caustic fumes when they are not stored properly or when they encounter water.

Keep the chemicals locked and stored in a secure, dry location away from children and pets. Never mix chlorine and bromine. A mixture of chlorine and bromine will release chlorine or bromine gas, both of which are highly toxic. In fact, these chemicals should not even be stored in the same area as each other, not just not mixed. Never use the same tool to handle two different pool chemicals.
When you add pool chemicals to the pool, always observe all manufacturer protocols and administer the chemicals in exactly the manner described. Generally, chemicals should be added to the water (not the other way around). When you add water to the chemicals, something called “wetting” occurs, which can result in a dangerous reaction.

Keep pool chemicals dry and stored somewhere they will not experience a higher risk of getting wet. Under normal conditions, chemicals are intended to be added to a very large volume or water; exposure to a little, or to high humidity, can result in the generation of toxic gasses, dangerous temperatures and worse. Store chemicals in a dry location away from plumbing and keep them in their sealed containers. The location where you store your pool chemicals should also be well ventilated area to help prevent a buildup of dangerous fumes.
Do not store chlorine in the same enclosure as the pool pump. Chlorine is a highly reactive, corrosive element that causes severe, accelerated corrosion to both copper and steel. Storing it near the pool pump will cause premature pump failure.
Do not store chemicals near flammable materials. Your storage location for your pool chemicals should be separate from (and not close to) flammable materials, such as solvents, aerosols, gasoline, and oil (among others).
