पांडवों ने अपनी खोज जारी रखी और हिमालय में गौरीकुंड पहुंचे, जहां उन्होंने अजीब दिखने वाले बैल को देखा। पांडव भाइयों में से एक, भीम ने अपनी गदा से बैल से लड़ाई की। बैल ने इस स्थान पर गोता लगाया और इस स्थान पर केवल उसका कूबड़ दिखाई दिया। भगवान शिव को पहचानने के बाद, पांडवों ने उनका आशीर्वाद मांगा और बदले में, उन्होंने उनके पापों को माफ कर दिया। तब पांडवों ने केदारनाथ में पहला मंदिर बनाया, और भगवान शिव उसमें ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में निवास गए थे। 

एक बार नर-नारायण भगवान विष्णु के जुड़वां अवतार ने बद्रिका गांव में शिव की पूजा शुरू की। उनकी तपस्या से प्रभावित होकर, भगवान शिव उनके सामने प्रकट हुए और मानवता के कल्याण के लिए, केदारनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में बर्फ से ढके हुए हिमालय में रहने का फैसला किया।

मंदिर में निवास करने वाले गौरवशाली महादेव को देखने के लिए हर साल दो लाख से अधिक तीर्थयात्री पैदल चलकर मंदिर आते हैं। हिंदू दार्शनिकों का मानना है कि हर किसी को अपनी आत्मा को पवित्र करने और शुद्धि प्राप्त करने के लिए मृत्यु से पहले कम से कम एक बार केदारनाथ की यात्रा करनी चाहिए।

इस मंदिर की एक कथा है, जो बहुत ही प्रचलित कथा है। जो की ब्रह्माजी और विष्णु जी की है। 

एक बार ब्रह्माजी और विष्णुजी मे बहुत ही भंयकर युद्ध छिड़ जाता है, की मैं बड़ा हूँ।  दोनों ही एक दूसरे से लड़ रहे थे, मैं आप से बड़ा हूँ। जो युद्ध खत्म होने का नाम ही नही ले रही थी। तो ये बात भगवान शिवजी तक जा पहुची। तब उन्होने उन दोनों से बोला की, मैं खुद को स्तम्भ मे बदल देता हूँ, और तुम दोनों निचला और ऊपरी भाग का पता कर के आना, जो भी पहले आएगा वो ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ होगा। जिसके लिए दोनों ने हाँ बोले। जिसके बाद ब्रह्माजी को ऊपरी भाग खोजने को कहा और विष्णुजी को निचली। जिसके बाद दोनों खोज करने चले गए। बहुत खोजने के बाद विष्णुजी को कुछ नही मिला तो वो खाली हाथ वापस आ गए, और बोले मैं नही खोज पाया। अब ब्रह्माजी की बारी थी, जो की वो विष्णुजी से हार नही मानना चाहते थे, तो उन्होने झूठ बोल दिया की मैंने खोज लिया। जिस पे भगवान शिव बहुत क्रोधित हो गए, और उन्हे अभिशाप दे दिये, की आज से उनकी पुजा कही नही की जाएगी। और तब से ही ब्रह्माजी की पुजा नही की जाती है।

Even after winning the Kurukshetra war, Pandavas were unhappy. They were unhappy because of killing their own brothers and teachers. They were dying under the sins of fratricide (Gotra Hatya) and Brahamhatya. Pandavas want atonement for their sins. Hence they started the search of Lord Shiva on the advice of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna told them that only Mahadev (lord Shiva) could provide them with atonement. Pandavas first searched for Lord Shiva in Varanasi also known as Kashi thinking that it was the favourite abode of Lord Shiva. But Pandavas got nothing in Varanasi because Lord Shiva transformed himself into a bull and hid in the Garhwal Himalayas. Lord Shiva was angry with them due to the unfair circumstances of the Kurukshetra war and he didn’t want to meet them. Pandavas also embarked on the Himalayas in search of Lord Shiva. One of the Pandava brothers Bheem was standing on the top of two mountains and saw a bull grazing near Guptkashi. He looked at the bull closely and carefully. Bheem immediately recognizes the bull as Lord Shiva. Bheem tried to catch the bull’s hind legs and tail. But Bheem failed to hold Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva in the form of a bull disappeared in the ground and reappeared in a different location. The hand appeared in Tungnath, Hump appeared in Kedarnath, Nabhi, or Madhya or the Middle part of the body appeared in Madhyamaheshwar, Face appeared in Rudranath, and Matted hair or Jata appeared in Kalpeshwar. Then Pandavas built temples in all these locations and got atonement from Lord Shiva.

5. Who built the Kedarnath Temple?

Initially, the Kedarnath temple was built by Pandavas. But in the 8th century AD, a saint named Adi Shankaracharya rebuilt the temple. Adi Shankaracharya was one of the great philosophers and saints. Adi Shankaracharya got enlightenment at a very young age of 32. 

6. Spiritual significance of Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath temple is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India. Kedarnath temple is also part of the Char Dham Yatra circuit along with Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath. Kedarnath is also part of the Do Dham Yatra along with Badrinath. 

7. Closed for Six months is a year

Kedarnath temple is situated at a height of 3583 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas. Due to the high altitude, Kedarnath experiences harsh weather and in winter the whole region gets covered with sheets of snow and it is impossible to reach the temple in winter. After a break of 6 months, the Kedarnath temple again opens on the date of Akshay Tritiya and again closes on the date of Bhai dhuj.
