पांडवों ने अपनी खोज जारी रखी और हिमालय में गौरीकुंड पहुंचे, जहां उन्होंने अजीब दिखने वाले बैल को देखा। पांडव भाइयों में से एक, भीम ने अपनी गदा से बैल से लड़ाई की। बैल ने इस स्थान पर गोता लगाया और इस स्थान पर केवल उसका कूबड़ दिखाई दिया। भगवान शिव को पहचानने के बाद, पांडवों ने उनका आशीर्वाद मांगा और बदले में, उन्होंने उनके पापों को माफ कर दिया। तब पांडवों ने केदारनाथ में पहला मंदिर बनाया, और भगवान शिव उसमें ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में निवास गए थे। 

एक बार नर-नारायण भगवान विष्णु के जुड़वां अवतार ने बद्रिका गांव में शिव की पूजा शुरू की। उनकी तपस्या से प्रभावित होकर, भगवान शिव उनके सामने प्रकट हुए और मानवता के कल्याण के लिए, केदारनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में बर्फ से ढके हुए हिमालय में रहने का फैसला किया।

एक बार ब्रह्माजी और विष्णुजी मे बहुत ही भंयकर युद्ध छिड़ जाता है, की मैं बड़ा हूँ।  दोनों ही एक दूसरे से लड़ रहे थे, मैं आप से बड़ा हूँ। जो युद्ध खत्म होने का नाम ही नही ले रही थी। तो ये बात भगवान शिवजी तक जा पहुची। तब उन्होने उन दोनों से बोला की, मैं खुद को स्तम्भ मे बदल देता हूँ, और तुम दोनों निचला और ऊपरी भाग का पता कर के आना, जो भी पहले आएगा वो ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ होगा। जिसके लिए दोनों ने हाँ बोले। जिसके बाद ब्रह्माजी को ऊपरी भाग खोजने को कहा और विष्णुजी को निचली। जिसके बाद दोनों खोज करने चले गए। बहुत खोजने के बाद विष्णुजी को कुछ नही मिला तो वो खाली हाथ वापस आ गए, और बोले मैं नही खोज पाया। अब ब्रह्माजी की बारी थी, जो की वो विष्णुजी से हार नही मानना चाहते थे, तो उन्होने झूठ बोल दिया की मैंने खोज लिया। जिस पे भगवान शिव बहुत क्रोधित हो गए, और उन्हे अभिशाप दे दिये, की आज से उनकी पुजा कही नही की जाएगी। और तब से ही ब्रह्माजी की पुजा नही की जाती है।

One of the Pandava brothers Bheem was standing on the top of two mountains and saw a bull grazing near Guptkashi. He looked at the bull closely and carefully. Bheem immediately recognizes the bull as Lord Shiva. Bheem tried to catch the bull’s hind legs and tail. But Bheem failed to hold Lord Shiva.
